Unit Export were successfully awarded a contract to supply a large package of equipment to the Government of Tuvalu. This was a high profile contract funded by the European Union to assist in Tuvalu’s efforts to improve its waste management processes.
The contract involved the supply and delivery of Tractors, Trailers, Excavators, Wheel Loaders, Vegetation Chippers, ATV’s, Waste Compactors, Tools, Signs, Bins and Waste containers of various sizes. The equipment was delivered to Funafuti and was also distributed to seven of the outer islands; Nanumea, Nanumaga, Niutao, Nui, Vaitupu, Nukufetau and Nukulalae.
The equipment was sourced in the region from manufacturers and suppliers based in New Zealand, Australia and Fiji, thus securing regional support for the end user to improve the long term sustainability of the equipment and ultimately ensure the projects objectives and goals.
Engineers were sent to Tuvalu to commission the equipment and complete training sessions for the project staff. Manuals, Videos and instructional DVDs were also produced for staff based on the outer islands.
The equipment was shipped in three separate consignments to Funafuti, where all items were consolidated ready for delivery and distribution. Due to the nature of the islands (being reef islands and atolls) the inter-island delivery was complicated and full of risks, there are no wharfs or quays for offloading, only narrow access channels cut into the reef to allow small boats access to the shore.
A dedicated vessel was chartered to distribute the equipment from Funafuti to each of the seven outer islands, this vessel was equipped with a small pontoon barge onto which the tractors, trailers and other equipment were transferred. The barge then negotiated the reef channels and offloaded the goods onto the shore of island.
