One of Unit Export’s most significant projects to date, this contract involved the supply of 23 kilometres of ductile iron pipes and fittings to the Hargeisa Urban Water Supply Upgrade Project (HUWSUP) in Somaliland, with project coordination through the United Nations Office in Nairobi. In response to regional water scarcity and rapid urbanization, HUWSUP is rebuilding Hargeisa’s decaying bulk-water transmission system, and increasing its transmission capacity.
The overall objective of the project is to improve access to safe and affordable water for vulnerable households in urban areas of Hargeisa city, through the expanded supply of drinking water from sustainable water source, whilst also creating employment opportunities for the local population.
These important infrastructure works will lay the foundation for ongoing and future water expansion works that will contribute to achieving the full potential of the new Hargeisa water system: drilling additional boreholes, connecting additional well fields, and upgrading the distribution network to deliver water to areas of the city that have so far been underserved.
With a project of this size, the need for precise project management was paramount, and as such visits were conducted with the factory in China as well as to the final project site to ensure that everything ran smoothly. The freight for the enormous amount of iron work was completed over the course of several shipments, with a total of 500 containers of pipes and fittings being transported from Tianjin to the HUWSUP site.
Inspections on random segments of pipe were carried out to ensure quality across each piece being delivered, with checks at both the factory and project site. Unit Export representatives were also present at the project site to ensure that no damage was inflicted on the pipe during unloading form the containers and stacking, ready for the local builders to complete final installation along the pipe route.
