Unit Export supplied and installed refrigerated containers and skips for a solid waste management project in Cyprus with a focus on the collection, transport and disposal of animal by-products. This venture forms part of the EU’s Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, which aims to promote social and economic, rural, human resources and regional development to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus.
The equipment supplied included 20ft refrigerated roll containers suitable for loading by hook-lift, 40ft cold storage rooms, leak proof skips (10, 5, 2 and 1 cubic metre versions) and several thousand sealable plastic bags for incineration of waste. The bags originated from Sweden whilst the containers/skips were manufactured in Turkey and then shipped by sea freight to the Northern part of Cyprus.
The main sources of solid animal by-products are farms (dead animals), slaughterhouse (animal by-products not intended or unfit for human consumption), butcher shops, supermarkets and meat processing plants. The equipment will therefore provide safe management of animal by-products, initially for those that pose high health and environmental risks; this is of paramount importance for the preservation of human/animal health and for the eradication of animal-borne contagious diseases.
